Irena (Kwoczka) Lyga

August 2, 1955 ~ June 9, 2017 (age 61)

The Piano Brothers

After a one year battle with ovarian cancer, Irena Lyga, 61, died peacefully June 9, 2017 in her home in Old Bridge, NJ. Irena was born on August 2, 1955 in Stare Bielice, Poland to Maria and the late Eliasz Kwoczka. At the age of 16, Irena immigrated to the United States of America in search of more opportunities for herself and her family. When she first arrived, she settled in Brooklyn, New York and later moved to New Jersey where she found work as a house cleaner and other various jobs. From Schering-Plough Pharmaceutical, to Merck, and finally retiring from NPS Pharmaceutical in 2015, she worked to establish a life built upon hard work and dedication to whatever she chose to do. In July of 1978, she married Michal Lyga, and a year later in 1979, the couple welcomed their son Steven. Irena was a caring and compassionate sister, aunt, co-worker, and friend who touched the lives of everyone she met. She was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church where she enjoyed volunteering with church activities. Along with this, Irena enjoyed traveling the world with her late husband, making spontaneous trips to Atlantic City, playing Phase 10, visiting family members in Canada, Ukraine, and Poland, and simply spending time with the family she loved. She is survived by her mother Maria Kwoczka; her sister Anna Lyga and husband Jan Lyga; sister Danka Chmielowski and husband Janusz Chmielowski; sister Olga Dytko and husband Steve Dytko; brother Bogdan Kwoczka and wife Elizabeth Kwoczka; nieces and nephews Stephanie and John Dytko, Christopher and Nicole Kwoczka, and Andrew and Nicholas Lyga. She is predeceased by her father Elias Kwoczka, her husband Michal, and son Steven. “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer, you beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live” Visitation Monday, 4:00-8:00 pm.
