Eleanor (Coakley) Daniel

Eleanor Coakley Daniel R.N., was born in Elizabeth to Frank and Estelle Coakley in 1925. Raised in Hillside, she attended St. Mary’s High School and took her nurse’s training at the Jersey City Medical Center, graduating in 1947 as a Registered Nurse. She began her career as a public health nurse from which she retired to raise a family. Later, she worked private duty in hospitals and private homes until she became a school nurse in Elizabeth in 1980. In 1949, she married Richard Daniel, together they raised 7 children and were active and engaged parents and citizens. Eleanor was a committed nurse in the public school system where she established after-school eye and ear clinics in districts with underprivileged populations. On many occasions, she went home with students afflicted with conditions such as lice or impetigo, to educate parents on proper practices for recovery. After retirement from the school system, Eleanor worked in many clinic situations and served as the traveling nurse for the Jersey City School System. Eleanor and Richard were, for many years, volunteers at Liberty State Park, taking school children on nature walks; they were devoted Friends of Hillside Library also sitting on the library Board of Directors; and were very active in Democratic club in Hillside. Eleanor was District Leader and ran the voting poll in her district for 20 years. Eleanor was predeceased by Richard in 2013, but is survived by her 7 children: Leigh, Kevin and spouse Judy, Peg and spouse John Paige, Rick, Chris and spouse Diana, Joe and spouse Tracey, Mary and spouse Douglas Sullivan; and 10 grandchildren: Ryan, Kirstin, Kelsey, Ben, Cody, Marley, Adriana and Natalie Daniel, Katie Paige, and Tara Sullivan. Her surviving sister Margaret Peg O’Grady lives in Carteret. Eleanor was aunt to dozens of nieces and nephews, some who live in New Jersey, and many living in various States across the nation. Visiting Thursday, 5:00-9:00 pm. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral on Friday, October 13, 2017, 9:00 am from Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home, 2124 E St. George Ave Linden, NJ 07036, (908)352-9190.
